Walls of Jerusalem
Written for Sightseeing Tours Australia
The Walls of Jerusalem National Park is a must-see experience for walkers, hikers, artists and nature-lovers alike. For its plethora of pure ancient pencil pines forests, towering dolerite peaks, highland lakes and tarns, and native Australian wildlife. With no road access, this spectacular high country is accessible only on foot and walkers should come prepared for unpredictable weather. Snow, rain, wind and sun are possible regardless of the season.
From the carpark, walkers’ endurance will be tested by the initial steep track via Trappers Hut to Wild Dog Creek campsite. But it is well worth the sweat and sore glutes as once you reach the campsite you will be greeted by seemingly untouched alpine beauty and gently undulating paths around the plateau. The dolerite peaks guard delicate low-growing alpine plants, tarns and highland lakes glimmer in the sun, a reminder of ancient waters, home to wombats, wallabies and other native animals.
From Wild Dog Creek campsite, the main track passes through Herods Gate into the interior Central Walls, and out through Damascus Gate to the charming historic Dixons Kingdom Hut. Side tracks are not to be missed, leading to the Pool of Bethesda or mountain summits including Solomons Throne, The Temple and Mount Jerusalem. At the top of one of these summits you can experience the ever-changing weather only alpine country supplies. Watch clouds roll towards you and down the steep landscape to the twisted pencil pine forests below.
A valid parks pass is required for entry to Tasmania’s national parks and can be purchased online at the Parks Tasmania website. Registration for the walk is also required and can be done online. Most walkers spend around 3-4 days here to wander and ponder, feeling spellbound by the experience. Experienced walkers might speed run the entire circuit in a day. But why rush? Take your time…. This is for nature loving.
